When no one responded to her knock, Layne didn't bother with the doorbell. It would have been disconnected in some way by her mother with a screwdriver or a hammer before or after her parents moved in. This was a mutual desire on the part of both of them. They discouraged visitors and not hearing them was an easy line of defense.
