King Ludd’s Rag is a DIY litmag, or maybe a zine of long-form fiction. Something like that. I actually like to think of it as lofi literature. Each issue is printed and stapled in our headquarters somewhere in the darkest corner of southwest Missouri. Each issue features two short stories, of at least four thousand words in length, that vary in form and tone and style but always have one thing in common— as Louis Armstrong said, “There is two kinds of music, the good and the bad. I play the good.” Well there is two types of fiction, and KLR publishes the good.

It’s a rare thing these days to find a litmag that wants long stories; even rarer is to find one that pays. When we started KLR we paid $50 per story, and we now pay $100 per story. We hope to be able to keep this rag going for the long haul, and we hope to be able to raise our pay rates again. We don’t have any illusions about changing the literary landscape, revolutionizing the world of publishing. But King Ludd’s Rag is a small thing we can do to make the world a little more the way we’d like it to be, and it’s cool.
