King Ludd’s Rag

King Ludd’s Rag is a print-only magazine for long-form fiction. Each issue will feature two short stories, both at least four thousand words long. Pay is $50 on publication. Readers will have the option to pay an extra dollar as a tip to go to the writers. Writers published in KLR will also get one free copy.

If you’d like your work to be considered, please send, in the body of an email, not as an attachment:

  • Your story (fiction only, at least four thousand words, and please include a word count at the top)

  • Your bio

  •  Any brief, relevant notes

Each issue will be bound by hand, so print runs will be somewhat small.

We will try to respond yes or no within three months. If you haven’t heard from us after three months please feel free to follow up. If we pass on your work it doesn’t mean it’s not good or that we dislike it; we have a limited budget so we’ll probably select, at most, three issues worth of stories during this reading period. And, to save time, Nos will probably come in the form of very polite form rejections.

Simultaneous subs are fine. Please withdraw if you piece is accepted elsewhere. For this project we are looking only for previously unpublished work.

Should we use your story, we only ask for one-time print rights. The work remains yours and you’re free to republish elsewhere at any time.

We know there are a lot of publishers out there and it’s unreasonable for them all to say “familiarize yourself with our magazine and buy a back issue before submitting.” So you’re welcome to send something even if you’re not that familiar with us. You’re also not expected to buy anything.

We don’t have strict genre restrictions, although in general we are looking for work that falls into the category of literary fiction. We aim to be as inclusive and nice as possible, but please note that Malarkey Books is ardently pro-swearing and we as ardently oppose racism, fascism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, Islamophobia, and all that stuff.

$50 for a 4,000-word story is an abysmally low rate, but it’s the best we can do for now. Our goal will be to raise this rate in the near future.

This reading period will close when we’ve selected six stories, and we will plan on publishing the first issue in January.

Whenever you’re ready, email your story to and please put KLR or King Ludd’s Rag, along with the title of your story, in the subject line.
